LIFE European Sharks

LIFE European Sharks

The project aims to reduce shark declines in the Mediterranean sea through an awareness campaign targeting marine stakeholders and the general public, providing skills towards the reduction of elasmobranch mortality and disturbance of vulnerable species in the Mediterranean, fostering a sense of co-responsibility and motivating change of behaviour. The project covers Italy, France, Spain, Croatia and Slovenia, the area where the largest decline of elasmobranch biomass is recorded. A participatory approach will improve compliance and public support of a variety of EU legislation (please see section 10). Data fit for management purposes will be collected, especially through citizen science projects, and shared with institutions, policy makers, other projects and communities, to facilitate knowledge sharing and the uptake of the project’s successful results. The specific objectives of this project are to: 1. reduce shark mortality in commercial fisheries, thus leading to more sustainable fisheries, and promote habitat restoration. 2. increase awareness of threats facing Mediterranean biodiversity and promote sustainable marine tourism.
